Vodafone Australia Day Social Media.
Jan 27th
Yesterday Vodafone was looking to engage with its customers on Facebook, yet the problem is with 1,000′s of angry customers and services not working the best on Australia day it is probably not wise to give users the power to run wild on your Facebook page. An example below of what the customers had to say in relation to the recent status update by Vodafone Australia:
(customer names have been blurred out for user privacy)
I understand doing social media work for Vodafone is not an easy gig, but who ever is in charge of strategy for the company needs to sit down and plan strategically about the type of status updates they are putting out the market and think about the potential problems in which can happen.
Some ideas for Klout, a Social Media influence tool.
Nov 27th
So I have been using Klout for a while, I set up an account and pretty much forgot about it. Then recently a few people started talking to me about Klout so needless to say I went back into my account to see what was happening.
I found out that my current Klout score is 47.
What is Klout?
Klout is a tool in which you can measure your social influence online, basically you link up all your social profiles you own and Klout gives you a a score based on the level of interaction you have with various people on these channels.
What Social Media sites can I like up with Klout?
- Twitter
- Facebook
- Google+
- Linkedin
- Foursquare
- Youtube
- FlickR
- Tumblr
- Blogger
- WordPress
- Last FM
- Instagram
Now The matter of this post is that if you have a true influence on social media you also are quite active on your own personal blog or blogs? Or you are quite active on Social Bookmarking websites and also active on Forums?
Currently you can not link up your own hosted WordPress site to Klout you can only link up sites on the wordpress sub domain, which is annoying becuase I currently have a few blogs on WordPress. I also am very active on numerous forums which relate to niches I work, I have 1000s of posts on these sites and I have been active on these sites since 2004 and finally I share a fair bit on social bookmarking. So my message for Klout is to try and link up some other social sites and have an option for people who host their own blogs, as currently whilst the Klout score is a good bit of fun it is no way an accurate level of ones social influence.

Social Media Experts come out of the woodwork to provide Qantas Social Media advice!
Nov 24th
So over the past few days we have been seeing a large number of so called “Social Media Experts” (usually some one who has around 1 year experience in social media who is a self confessed expert) come’s out of the woodwork in the Australian market and start’s saying: this is how Qantas should be doing their Social Media Strategy, this is how they should be responding to customers, this is how they should run the accounts and throwing around a whole bunch of advice.
Most of these people have limited experience in working with big brands social media and most if not any have ever worked with brand reputation management social media. Where you have to deal with consumer backlash in light of negative PR for a large brand. I am not talking about some small one man shop brand which sold some bad food, I am talking about ASX listed companies and to potential problems which can happen.
Now the first thing which I find funny is the amount of people who are saying that Qantas is not doing things right by not replying to all the comments and mentions which are been thrown around the web. What this shows is that all the Social Media Experts have not even bothered to do some analysis on the mentions behind the Qantas brand and related terms.
I compiled some quick analysis and saw that when the plans were grounded by Qantas we saw over – 65,000 mentions.
In light of the new social campaign we saw over 13,000+ mentions in light of the #QuantasLuxury hash tag.
(refer to analysis below)
Now what is the point of the analysis above, it is to show that when you receive over 65,000 brand mentions you can not physically get out into the market and have a personal response for all concerned. You need to work your strategy around developing how to best respond to these comments, replying to 13,000 comments in one day or even 65,000 comments is not going to be possible is it with out automated software which I would not recommend at all, I do not get why people are recommending this at all.
This been said I think Qantas need to take a step back and sit down and build up a strategy for the next 12 months. All areas need to be looked, things such as potential outcomes both positive and negative need to be addresses. A great thing you can do is also listen to the customers, what do the real customers want the ones in which have been affected but are still with the brand. Involving customers who are still part of the brand and probably the best thing to do is not run any competitions for the moment.
Other important points to note for future Social campaigns include:
- Could Qantas use Influences to speak for the brand (blogger out reach)
- How can you manage the reply process over time.
- What properties can you use to the best effect for the brand.
- What should your messaging be?
- Who should be involved in the campaign?
Social Influence on Serps
Jun 24th
So I think any one who has been working in SEO over the last few years has been hearing and reading a lot of chit chat about the influence of social on search! I know because I have been one of the guys writing a lot of social/seo related content and my job is a Senior SEO and Social Media Specialist.
But I think before every one gets ahead of themselves here we need to remember what is the general public doing and seeing in these search results? I find it kind of funny when SEO moz or the likes do some analysis on their internal SERP from the network they connect with. I mean the results are going to be highly skewed to your own friends content correct (because these are the guys who are highly social savvy) I do not think it is the best guide to take at all.
You really need to shut off all personalization by viewing content in SERPS’s via Ad Preview from Google or by adding &pws=0 to search results, when conducting these tests.
A lot of guys will also ask what can I do to assist social search? Well here is some basic advice -
* Work out which platforms work best for your target market? I mean you are not going to fill up FARK.com buttons on a insurance brands website now are you? But a tech website you may do it.
* You really need to get across all Q&A websites like Quora and the likes as these sites work well.
* You really need to research what social buttons work and which social buttons do not work niche by niche? I mean do In shares work, do FB shares work, do +1′s work?
* Test cool social tools to aid your Social SEO example LIKEPLUS1 –
You need to research, research, research and then keep testing non stop.
I am running many social SEO tests recently and will share bits and pieces as I gather results.
Facebook Places is the TOP dog in Location apps
Oct 8th
Well it has only taken around 1 month and now Facebook Places is officially the largest location based application on the market,
It has taken the top spot from other location based services such as Gowola and Foursquare in little to no time.
It was obvious Facebook as going to be able to achieve such results with the huge user base they have on hand.
Also on the subject of Facebook, Facebook has made Chat upgrades and Upgrades to Facebook Groups
In a bid to give users more tools and control over the sharing of information (and perhaps preempt Google) Facebook introduced a new
way to create and communicate with small private groups of people. Through an API this same functionality will be extended to publishers and third
party developers like Facebook Connect is today.
Don’t mess with Animals or Social Media will get you!

Don’t mess with Animals or Social Media will get you!
Well I think most people are aware of the mean cat lady who last week put a poor innocent Kitty into a bin for no reason,
I am not really a cat person, I am more of a dog person but still it makes my blood boil to see this type of thing happening
to poor innocent animals.
Here is a new report of What originally happened.
As you know this video cause quite a stir in the world and now thanks to social media people have come back
in a big way !!
1. We saw the viral video “Revenge of the cat” be made where we see a cat place the woman in the bin! –
2. we saw a viral Facebook page be made “Cat Lady should do time in a bin”
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cat-Lady-should-do-time-in-a-bin/143513942355775?ref=ts
3. We saw a Twitter page be made “Cat Bin Lady” which now has close to 12k followers!!
People need to watch and learn if you are mean to animals their is going to be a social media revolt against you,
you will have your image wrecked for life. So if you are thinking about hurting a poor innocent animal in the future
DON’T do it because you could be left with a very poor social media image.
The Death of Foursquare, introducing Facebook Places
Aug 19th
Today Facebook launched their new location based software dubbed Facebook Places the name sounds a little to similar to Google places if you ask me. The big question here is what does this mean for Foursquare and other location based software services. Basically it means that Facebook will be using its pre existing mobile network of over 100 million + to push this new Facebook offering. Personally I think this is a real killer for Foursquare because Facebook has such a large users base and predominantly mobile based users.
A key problem with this service is that is very similar to Foursquare, as Check ins are part of the platform. So is adding places you have visited, One key difference between it and Foursquare is that Facebook does not just show you nearby places to your locations, but places it thinks are relevant to you.
The key area for Facebook is that it is looking to make partnerships with other services such as Foursquare, Yelp, Booya and Goowla.
Facebook launched the new location based service today in Palo alto – California to a large media gathering at a press conference.
Facebook is aiming to make this service a set of memories at specific locations.
